about

In 2003, with legendary New York City ska act Mephiskapheles on hiatus, a few of the band members got together to form a side project: Skull-A-Ball. Andre A. Worrell on lead vocals, Bill McKinney and Greg Robinson on guitars, and Mike Bitz on bass, with Giulliano Sebben on drums recorded a three-song EP in 2003, at McKinney's house in North Philadelphia, with "Big Dan" Jeselsohn at the controls.

Soon it was time to hit the New York and New Jersey bar and nightclub scene. Skull-A-Ball's first gig was at The Lucky Cat, a coffeehouse in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The band rocked the small audience of mostly Mephiskapheles fans, curious what a post-Meph group would sound like. The night was a rousing success and an auspicious beginning for Skull-A-Ball.

Skull-A-Ball proved to be a brief but exhilarating ride for its members, their credo summed up in one of Worrell's lyrics in the opening song, Truth From You: "Get in the van and try it all again/ For ourselves, as long as we can." Alas, artistic differences and lineup changes impeded progress. Gradually, the steam went out of the project and the group disbanded around 2006.

Besides the self-titled EP reissued here, there would be no further studio output from Skull-A-Ball. To date, no live recordings of the band in its heyday have surfaced.
